A New West teen is dead and another student is in hospital after taking what police say was a “lethal strain of drug.”
The New Westminster school district has launched a critical incident response plan to help students and staff deal with the tragedy.
“Our heartfelt condolences goes to the family and all who have known this student,” said the district in a statement issued Sunday. “We fully recognize that students and staff will need support at this devastating time.”
On Saturday, police warned the public about a deadly batch of unknown drugs that has hit New Westminster streets, taking one life and leaving another person in critical condition.
Both people bought the drug in pill form from the same street drug dealer.
The victim was 16 years old, confirmed police.
Global News reported the student ingested what she thought was MDMA or ecstasy. Toxicology results are expected this week.
The school district said it had been concerned about the ongoing opioid overdose epidemic, and had held a community event earlier this month to raise awareness about the drug use crisis.
“The tragedy we face underscores the importance that we must continue to work together to provide support in all areas from prevention and early intervention to harm reduction and treatment options,” it said.
Extra counsellors and staff will be present on Monday to provide additional support to students.
